Appliance Repair Estimate Checklist: What to Ask Before You Approve

A clear estimate protects you from surprise charges. Use these questions before you say yes.

Updated October 26, 2026. General information only, not professional advice. Sound Appliance Connect is a referral service and does not perform repairs.

Before the visit

  • What is the diagnostic or service call fee?
  • Is the fee credited toward the repair if I approve it?
  • Do you service my brand and model, including built-in or premium units?
  • What is the arrival window, and how will you contact me?
  • Is there an extra fee for evenings, weekends, or same-day visits?

At the diagnosis

  • What is the cause of the problem, in plain words?
  • Is the part new, original, or aftermarket?
  • Do you have the part on hand, or must it be ordered? How long will it take?
  • What is the total cost, including parts, labor, taxes, and fees?
  • Can you put that in writing?

Warranty and follow-up

  • What warranty applies to parts and labor, and for how long?
  • What happens if the same problem returns?
  • Who do I call, and how, if something goes wrong?

Compare before you approve

For larger repairs, compare the estimate with the cost of a new appliance. See our repair or replace guide and cost ranges. If the estimate seems high, you can ask for a second opinion, though you may pay another diagnostic fee.

Warning signs

  • Pressure to approve work immediately, without a written estimate.
  • An estimate that has no breakdown of parts and labor.
  • A technician who will not state the cause of the fault.
  • Requests for payment far in advance of the work.

Keep your own records

Save the estimate, invoice, and warranty terms. Take photos of the appliance's model label and any error codes. These help with future repairs and warranty claims.

Ready to request help?

When you request service, we pass your details to an independent provider who covers your area, if one is available. The provider sets prices and warranty, and you approve the work before it starts.

Quick answers

Should I get more than one estimate?

For large repairs, a second opinion can be worthwhile, though you may pay another diagnostic fee.

What should an estimate include?

The cause of the problem, parts, labor, fees, taxes, total price, and warranty terms.

What if the final price is higher than the estimate?

Ask the provider to explain and put any change in writing before more work happens.
