Dryer Repair in Seattle, the Eastside & Tacoma

No heat, endless cycles, or a loud drum: tell us what the dryer is doing and request a connection to an independent repair provider.

Same-day requests are welcome, but provider availability must be confirmed. No appointment or response time is guaranteed. We are a referral service and do not perform repairs.

  • You approve the price before work starts
  • No payment to submit a request
  • Refrigerator, washer, dryer, oven, dishwasher

In a region where drying clothes on a line is a short summer hobby, a dryer that stops heating is more than an inconvenience. This page explains the most common dryer faults described in requests across the Seattle area, the quick checks that can save you a service visit, and the price ranges people typically see for gas and electric dryers.

Sound Appliance Connect is a referral service. We do not employ technicians and we do not repair appliances. When you submit a request, a provider who covers your ZIP code may contact you to discuss a diagnosis visit and an estimate. The provider sets prices, timing, and warranty terms, and you approve any work before it begins.

Common dryer problems

The dryer runs but does not heat

On an electric dryer, the heating element, the thermal fuse, the high-limit thermostat, or the cycling thermostat is usually at fault. A common culprit is a 240-volt circuit where only half of the double breaker has tripped, so the drum spins but there is no heat. On a gas dryer, a weak igniter, failed gas valve coils, or a flame sensor can leave the burner dark. If the dryer will not heat and the vent is clogged, a safety thermostat may have shut it down.

Clothes take two or three cycles to dry

This is almost always a ventilation problem. A lint-packed duct, a crushed flexible hose behind the dryer, or a clogged exterior vent flap traps moist air and heat. Cleaning the lint screen after every load helps, but the ductwork behind the wall needs periodic cleaning too. A long vent run, many elbows, or a duct that runs through a cold crawlspace makes the problem worse.

The drum will not turn or the dryer will not start

A worn drive belt, a broken idler pulley, a failed drive motor, or a faulty door switch can each stop the drum or the start sequence. If you can hear the motor hum but the drum does not turn, the belt has probably broken. If nothing happens at all, check the circuit breaker, then the door switch and the start switch.

Squealing, thumping, or grinding

A squeal at startup is often a worn idler pulley or drum support roller. A rhythmic thumping usually points to a flat spot on a worn roller or a damaged belt. Grinding can mean a failed motor bearing. These sounds are early warnings, and worn parts can damage others if you wait.

A burning smell or very hot exterior

Stop using the dryer immediately. Lint buildup is a leading cause of dryer fires, and a burning smell may mean lint has reached the heating area. Unplug the dryer, and for a gas model shut off the gas valve. Get the unit and the vent inspected before using it again.

The dryer shuts off mid-cycle

A dryer that stops partway through can be tripping on overheating because of a clogged vent, a failing thermal component, or a moisture sensor that is dirty. Wipe the sensor bars inside the drum with a cloth and rubbing alcohol if clothes seem to stop drying early.

Clothes come out damp or smell musty

If clothes are damp but warm, the vent is likely restricted. If they are cool and damp, the heating system is not working. A musty smell can also come from a duct that has moisture trapped inside, which is more common in homes where the vent run is long or unsealed.

The dryer will not stop or the timer is stuck

A stuck timer, a failed moisture sensor, or a control board issue can keep a dryer running. Disconnect power if it will not stop and request service.

What to check before you request service

A few minutes of preparation can save a visit, or at least make the visit faster. Work through this list, and stay safe: unplug the appliance before touching anything behind panels.

  • Clean the lint screen and wash it with soapy water once in a while, since fabric softener leaves a film that blocks airflow.
  • Pull the dryer out and check the vent hose. A kinked or crushed hose is a quick fix.
  • Check the exterior vent flap while the dryer runs. It should open fully.
  • For an electric dryer, check the breaker panel for a double-pole breaker that has partly tripped.
  • For a gas dryer, confirm the gas valve behind it is open. If you smell gas, leave the home and call Puget Sound Energy or 911 from outside.
  • Write down the brand, model, and serial number, and whether it is gas or electric.
  • Note whether the dryer is stacked, in a closet, or in a garage so access can be planned.
Safety first. Dryer lint is flammable. Clean the lint screen after every load and have the vent duct cleaned when drying times grow longer. If you ever smell gas, do not touch switches. Leave the home immediately, then call Puget Sound Energy or 911 from a safe location.

Dryer repair FAQ

Why is my dryer not heating?

On electric dryers, the heating element, thermal fuse, or a partly tripped 240-volt breaker are common causes. On gas dryers, the igniter or valve coils are likely suspects. A blocked vent can also trigger safety shutoffs.

How much does dryer repair cost in Seattle?

Many dryer repairs fall between $100 and $350, including diagnosis, parts, and labor. Vent cleaning is a separate service. These are general estimates, not quotes. See our dryer not heating guide for more.

Is a dryer worth repairing?

Most dryers are simple machines, so repair is often worth it unless the unit is very old and the cost is close to the price of a new one. A repair of $200 or less on a dryer under 12 years old is typically reasonable.

Why does my dryer take so long to dry?

Check the lint screen, the hose behind the dryer, and the exterior vent flap. A restricted vent is the most common reason for long cycles.

Can you fix gas dryers?

We do not do repairs ourselves. Some independent providers handle gas models and some do not, so please mark gas or electric on your request.

Is it safe to use a dryer that smells like burning?

No. Stop using it, unplug it, and shut off the gas if it is a gas model. Have it inspected.

Can I get same-day dryer repair?

Select "today if available" on the form. Availability varies, and we cannot promise a same-day visit.

Need dryer help?

It takes about two minutes. Share the appliance, your ZIP code and the symptoms, and we will look for an independent provider in your area.

No appointment or response time is guaranteed. Provider availability varies by ZIP code.
