Oven & Range Repair in Seattle and Surrounding Cities

Cold oven, uneven baking, or a burner that will not light: describe the problem and request a connection to an independent repair provider.

A cold oven the night before guests arrive is the kind of problem that reminds you how much you rely on your kitchen. This page covers the faults that come up most often with gas and electric ovens, ranges, and cooktops in the Seattle area, what is safe to check yourself, and what repairs tend to cost.

Sound Appliance Connect is a referral service, not a repair company. We do not employ technicians. With your permission, we forward your request to an independent provider who covers your area, if one is available. The provider discusses the visit, the diagnostic fee, and the repair price with you directly, and you decide whether to proceed.

Common oven & range problems

The oven will not heat

In an electric oven, a burnt-out bake element is the most common cause. You can often see a blister or a break in the coil. In a gas oven, a weak igniter that glows but does not open the gas valve is a very common fault. A control board, temperature sensor, or relay can also stop heating. An oven that works for broil but not bake points toward the bake element or the control.

Uneven baking or the wrong temperature

If the oven is much hotter or cooler than the dial, the temperature sensor may be drifting, or the control calibration may be off. An oven thermometer in the center of the rack will tell you how far off it is. Uneven browning can come from a worn door gasket, a failing convection fan, or an element that is only partly working.

A cooktop burner that will not light or heat

On a gas cooktop, clogged burner ports, a wet or dirty igniter, or a failed spark module can stop burners from lighting. On an electric coil, a burnt element or a bad receptacle is typical. On a smooth-top, a failed infinite switch or a broken element can leave a zone dead. Induction cooktops have their own diagnostics, and may need specialized service.

Self-clean cycle problems

Self-clean cycles run at very high heat, which stresses door locks and control boards. A door that locks and will not open, or a cycle that trips error codes, can be a failed latch motor or a failed thermal fuse. Avoid starting a cycle if the oven is already acting unreliably.

Door will not close, latch, or seal

A door that hangs open or has a gap lets heat escape and makes cooking uneven. Worn hinges, a broken spring, or a damaged gasket are typical causes. A gasket can be replaced without much trouble on many models.

A gas smell near the range

Stop. Do not light anything or touch switches. Leave the home, then call Puget Sound Energy or 911 from outside. A faint odor right after you light the oven is not unusual, but a persistent smell is not safe.

Clock, display, or touchpad failures

A dead display or non-responding keypad often points to a control board or a ribbon cable. Power surges after storms and moisture near the stove can damage electronics.

Convection fan noise or failure

A loud rattle or a fan that has stopped can affect baking performance. A failing fan motor and loose fan blade are common.

What to check before you request service

A few minutes of preparation can save a visit, or at least make the visit faster. Work through this list, and stay safe: unplug the appliance before touching anything behind panels.

  • Check the circuit breaker for an electric range. Many ranges use a double-pole breaker, and half of it may have tripped.
  • Try each burner and the broil function. Which parts work narrows down the cause.
  • Use an oven thermometer to see if the actual temperature matches what you set.
  • Look at the bake element for visible breaks, blisters, or burn marks, with the oven off and cool.
  • On a gas range, check that the gas supply valve is open, and that burner caps are seated correctly.
  • Record the brand, model, serial number, and any error codes shown on the display.
  • Tell the provider whether the range is freestanding, slide-in, built-in, or a wall oven.
Safety first. If you smell gas, do not operate any switches or flames. Leave the home immediately and call Puget Sound Energy or 911 from outside. Never use the oven for heating the home. Switch off the breaker before inspecting an electric element.

Oven & range repair FAQ

Why is my oven not heating but the stovetop works?

On an electric oven, the bake element is the most common reason. On a gas oven, the igniter is often weak. The control board or a temperature sensor can also be the cause.

How much does oven repair cost in Seattle?

Typical repairs run $125 to $450 including parts and labor, and control boards on premium models can cost more. These are general estimates rather than quotes from a provider.

Can you repair gas ranges?

We do not do repairs ourselves. Some independent providers service gas appliances and some do not, so state gas or electric in your request.

My oven temperature is off. Is that a repair?

Sometimes the oven can be recalibrated. If the sensor is failing, it may need replacement. Check with an oven thermometer first.

Is it worth repairing an old range?

If the range is less than 15 years old and the repair is modest, repairing is usually sensible. For very old units or costly boards, replacement may make more sense. See our repair or replace guide.

Is it safe to use the oven if the door does not close tightly?

It is better not to. Heat can escape and the oven may overheat controls. Request service.

Do I pay you for the connection?

No payment is requested on this site. You pay the independent provider directly after you approve the estimate.

Need oven & range help?
